Day 1 – The Beginning - My First Intentional Photo

The Beginning - My First Intentional Photo

Even simple subjects can tell a story when approached with intention.

Reflection: I chose to photograph my camera sitting on my desk, surrounded by notebooks and ideas. It felt symbolic - this tool that will help me see the world differently over the next 30 days.

Day 2 – Natural Light Portrait

Jan 2

Natural Light Portrait

Window light is soft and flattering - much better than harsh overhead lighting.

Reflection: Today I practiced using natural window light to take a self-portrait. I'm learning how the direction and quality of light can completely change the mood of a photo.

Day 3 – Coffee Shop Atmosphere

Coffee Shop Atmosphere

Ambient lighting can tell a story just as much as the subject itself.

Reflection: I spent an hour at my local coffee shop, observing how light moves through the space and trying to capture the cozy atmosphere. Still learning to be discreet with street photography.

Day 4 – Abstract Shadows

Abstract Shadows

Harsh midday light isn't always bad - it can create dramatic shadows and contrast.

Reflection: Found these interesting shadow patterns on a building wall during midday. I'm starting to notice how light creates geometry everywhere around us.

Day 5 – Golden Hour Cityscape

Golden Hour Cityscape

Timing is everything in photography - the same scene can look completely different depending on the light.

Reflection: This was my first real attempt at cityscape photography. The golden hour light made even familiar buildings look magical. I can see why photographers wake up early and stay out late for this light.

Day 6 – Texture Study

Texture Study

Macro photography reveals hidden worlds in ordinary objects.

Reflection: Spent time looking at everyday objects up close. This wooden surface caught my eye because of the interesting grain patterns. Starting to see potential photos in the most mundane things.

Forest Path Adventure

Leading lines are powerful compositional tools that guide the viewer's eye through the frame.

Reflection: First week complete! Decided to celebrate by hiking and taking my camera outdoors. This path had beautiful leading lines that drew me in. I'm gaining confidence with my camera settings.

Rainy Day Reflections

Weather challenges can become creative opportunities with the right mindset.

Reflection: Seattle weather provided the perfect opportunity to practice reflection photography. The wet pavement created mirror-like surfaces that doubled the visual interest of ordinary scenes.

Day 9 – Black and White Experiment
9
Completed
Jan 9

Black and White Experiment

Black and white photography is about tones and contrast, not just removing color.

Reflection: Challenged myself to think in black and white today. It's amazing how removing color forces you to focus on light, shadow, and composition instead.

Day 10 – Food Photography Basics

Completed
Jan 10

Food Photography Basics

Food photography requires quick work - food looks best fresh and hot!

Reflection: Attempted my first food photography session with a homemade pasta dish. Learning that food photography is part cooking, part styling, and part lighting. The 45-degree angle seemed to work best.
